A Weekend in York

L1000802-Edit

Here are some shots taken on a trip to York, mainly to celebrate the impending marriage of a friend of mine. Whilst there, I took the opportunity to visit the “Shambles”, and the National Rail Museum.

Royal Gunpowder Mills – 2011

IMG_9935

It took a while, what with other events such as VE Day in Belencourt, but finally I have processed my shots from the VE day event held this year over the May day bank holiday weekend, at Waltham Abbey, home of the Royal Gunpowder Mills.

There are a few more baby pics in here, but there are also a lot of battle action….and a Hurricane!

Bellancourt – VE Day Remembrance

L1000664

This year the re-enactment group took a trip over to France to help celebrate, and most of all remember, VE Day. Though it was my first trip over there, it wasn’t the first time the group has done this. They feel highly honoured to be invited to the village of Bellancourt, to take part in their VE Remembrance parades, acting as the guard of honour in the cemeteries where members of the regiment they portray are buried. It’s quite the humbling experience.

Along for the trip, on his first ever visit to France, was 7 month old Davey, the son of a couple of good friends of mine. So the gallery isn’t just full of men in uniform.

Military Odyssey 2010

I’ve not been to many re-enactments this year, in fact up till recently I’d not managed to make any! Either due to miscommunication or clashing with other activities. So these could be my only shots of this type this year, unless I managed to get invited to a private event or such like.

Portsmouth & Southsea Rotary Charity Dragon Boat Festival

IMG_7908

The company I work for recently attended the Portsmouth & Southsea Rotary Charity Dragon Boat Festival in order to raise money for Naomi House. I went along to take these snaps. Our boat can be easily spotted, it’s the one crewed by the people in the highly fashionably Bee costumes (or as one spectator was overheard saying “Oh look, that boats crewed by wasps!”). Our team did rather well, after a shaky start they managed to make the final race, in which the 6 finalists crossed the line within a second of each other. Alas we came 6th, but 6th out of around 30 teams is an excellent days work!

Posting this a bit late (well into 2010 now), but last year in September I went to Cornwall for a 2 week photography holiday with a mate of mine, and here are the results. I’ve made 2 albums on the site for this trip, one for the Macro shots, and one for the Landscapes.

Winchfield Training – 2009

IMG_7400

Back in September, I went along to a private battle and training event with my friends from the re-enactment group.

As well as falling over a tree and injuring my back (which still aches now and then), I got a few half decent shots :)

A Weekend to Porlock and Exmoor

IMG_6240

Myself and two friends spent a nice long weekend in Porlock, just on the Exmoor border, last week.

During this photography marathon we did a single day catching a sunrise and the sunset, and 3 other locations (plus the hotel bar) in between! I nearly broke my camera when the stones beneath the tripod shifted and toppled the whole lot onto rocks. No damage was sustained at all fortunately. And we got caught out by the tide flooding the fields behind the beach on the Saturday evening, making the walk back to the hotel 2 or 3 times longer than our tired legs were expecting.

As well as Porlock, we visited Porlock Weir, Lynton, Watersmeet and a stop off on the moors of Exmoor. And on the way back, we dropped into Dunster Castle near Minehead.

Oh…and the Cream Teas were excellent!

War on the Line – 2009

IMG_5955

This last weekend was War on the Line weekend on the Watercress Line. We had a good number of people turn out dressed up in ’40s gear, and a good number of “MOPS” (Members of the Public) come and see us. It’s a good day out!

I spent the Saturday on Photography duties. I normally do reenactment photos in Black and White, as it suits the period more (though obviously colour was about). This time however I’ve decided to go Colour. I’m quite pleased with the results. I’m also really chuffed with the 5D2 camera, the sharpness and detail is awesome!

Abbotstone and Frensham Ponds

IMG_5758

Did my first macro trips this weekend, the first to Abbotstone on a Friday evening. The second to Frensham Ponds on Saturday afternoon.

I decided to try out my Canon 5D Mark II. I’m unsure whether it will make a good Macro camera. My 40d may be only 10 megapixels compared to the 20 on the 5D2, but it isn’t a full frame camera and has built in “crop”. That essentially means that I can get tighter shots on the 40D than on the 5D2. Then again, as the 5D2 has those 20 mega pixels, there is a huge amount of room to crop in photoshop!

As it turns out the results are more than passable for a first attempt. However I’m still unsure which will turn out to be my macro camera of choice. The experimentation will continue!
